Alexander Savko
/Born 1957/
Alexander Savko, a distinguished Russian artist hailing from Transnistria, Moldova, has rightfully earned his place as a notable figure in the dynamic Moscow art scene spanning the last three decades. Having pursued studies in scenography at the Odessa Theatre and Art School, Savko made the move to Moscow in the late 1980s, immersing himself in the legendary art squat on Bauman Street. Presently, the artist continues to shape his creative path, residing and working in Moscow.
Savko's significant impact on the global art landscape, particularly in the realm of palimpsest, is undeniable. His works ingeniously blend masterpieces from world painting with icons of mass culture, forging a unique space that reinterprets historical periods and unveils fresh perspectives on the past and present. At the core of Savko's artistic mission is the subtle suggestion of a mysterious connection between seemingly incompatible characters and backgrounds, laying bare the absurd collision of cultural codes. His compositions often feature characters from comics and animations seamlessly integrated into the context of classical art, resulting in compositions that are both unconventional and emotionally resonant.
An active participant in the art scene since 1988, Savko has showcased his solo exhibitions in Moscow, Berlin, Vienna, Chisinau, and St. Petersburg. His works have found a home in esteemed institutions such as the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Erarta Museum of Contemporary Art (St. Petersburg), the National Museum of Norway (Oslo), the Museum of Contemporary Art (Perm), the Museum of Decorative Arts (Moscow), the Literary Museum, the Zverev Center, the Manege Central Exhibition Hall (Moscow), Erarta Gallery (London), as well as various municipal galleries in Moscow, including "Na Kashirke," "Belyaevo," "A-3," and numerous other state and private galleries. Savko's participation extends to notable events such as the Slavic Biennale in Cetinje, the Novosibirsk Biennale of Graphic Arts, the Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art, and the prestigious international art fair FIAK (Paris). His artistic contributions have earned him nominations for the Kandinsky Prize in Moscow.
Remaining a central figure in the underground art scene of the 1980-90s, Alexander Savko continues to capture attention with his intellectual and playful approach to postmodernism. His works not only reproduce images and codes from other creators but serve as poignant reminders of the mysterious connections bridging different cultural codes. The artist persists in astonishing and inspiring audiences with his extraordinary and thought-provoking intertwining of art and the passage of time.
